Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) - Diagnosis and Procedure
Diagnosis - Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP):
An OB-GYN performs a pelvic ultrasound to determine the pregnancy's duration and identify underlying conditions like ectopic or molar pregnancies. Simultaneously, blood and urine tests help detect medical conditions such as anemia, diabetes, high/low blood pressure, as well as sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). The OB-GYN then uses these test results to determine the optimal pregnancy termination method, whether it be medical abortion or surgical abortion.Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Procedure:
The MTP procedure involves the use of two medicines: Mifepristone and Misoprostol. Under the supervision of a doctor, the patient administers Mifepristone at the clinic. Subsequently, within 24-48 hours of the initial medicine, the patient is instructed to take Misoprostol. This second medicine can be taken either at the clinic or at home. Mifepristone works by blocking the essential pregnancy hormone and facilitating the detachment of the embryo from the uterine wall. In contrast, Misoprostol induces uterine contractions and slightly dilates the cervix, aiding in the expulsion of the pregnancy. Abortion typically commences within 24 hours of the second medicine intake. The entire medical termination of pregnancy process is usually completed within a span of 7 to 10 days.
